Increasing Recruitment of Women into Non-traditional Work in Newfoundland and Labrador

Woman in non-traditional work

A project in Newfoundland and Labrador significantly impacted the number of women entering – and remaining in – skilled trades and technology jobs in the province. Working with local women as well as industry, union, government and training program representatives, WRDC developed an action plan to support women’s advancement into high-paying jobs in the construction and natural resources sectors. The plan, which has been widely shared, addresses long-standing barriers to change and proposes practical support for women transitioning from training and educational programs to full-time employment in these sectors. Through the project, WRDC established sustainable working relationships with partners across the province and also enhanced its tools and resources, which include train-the-trainer programs and practical guides to gender awareness and respectful workplaces.

“Some of the most positive impacts of this project included the creation of new resources to attract, recruit and retain women in trades and technology training programs in public and private education institutions throughout the province ... peer mentoring programs, networking events, institution-specific women-centered magazines, promotional/awareness campaigns, and scholarships, to name a few ...”
