Measuring Violence against Women: Statistical Trends (2012)

Introduction

On February 25, 2013, Statistics Canada released an updated version of Measuring Violence against Women: Statistical Trends (PDF format, 120 pages, 1.48 MB), which was commissioned by Federal-Provincial-Territorial (FPT) Ministers responsible for the Status of Women. FPT Ministers have met regularly since 1981 to discuss efforts to achieve equality for women. The FPT Forum gives Ministers the opportunity to work together to address issues of concern to women and girls in Canada.

This report marks the third time the FPT Status of Women Forum has worked with Statistics Canada to add to the body of evidence on gender-based violence. The report is intended to inform governments, non-governmental organizations, service providers, academics, researchers and all others working to eliminate violence against women and girls.

The report uses both police-reported crime data (including the Incident-based Uniform Crime Reporting Survey and the Homicide Survey) and self-reported victimization data (including the General Social Survey, the Transition Home Survey and the Victim Services Survey).
