Disclosure of Grant and Contribution Awards

Recipient Name: COMMUNITIES FOR CHILDREN: SASKATOON'S PLANNING COUNCIL FOR A CHILD AND YOUTH FRIENDLY COMMUNITY
Location: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Date: 2007-10-12
Value: $75,000.00
Type: Grant
Purpose: This year-long pilot project will develop a continuum of services for girl children and young women, most of whom are Aboriginal, who are at risk of or currently experiencing sexual exploitation. These youth will be guided to explore avenues to self-reliance, rather than engage in high-risk activities. The Girls Action and Information Network will provide skill-based activities (pre-employability and life skills), support options, peer programming, educational opportunities, outreach services, parenting education and referrals in a non-judgmental, safe environment. Support will include awareness and prevention of high-risk activities to move participants toward a healthy lifestyle. Peer support and peer-led programs will be run by experiential youth who have left high-risk situations. The project is expected to provide one-to-one support to 50 to 75 female youth; as well, approximately 500 young women will benefit indirectly through increased awareness and prevention strategies.
