---|---|
Location: | Collingwood, Ontario |
Date: | 2008-03-03 |
Value: | $41,200.00 |
Type: | Grant |
Purpose: | This 12-month project will allow 20 women living in transitional housing to gain the knowledge and skills they need to break the cycle of abuse they are experiencing. Using a peer mentorship model, Home Horizon residents will participate in workshops on abuse prevention, life skills, financial literacy, self esteem, healthy relationships and goal setting. Participants will share the skills they have learned from community experts with new Home Horizon residents, creating a sustainable transfer of knowledge. A particular focus of the project will be on the difficulties women face in filing complex legal documents related to court proceedings and child custody issues. Women will complete these tasks collectively with the assistance of a community expert, enabling them to navigate the legal system effectively. As a result of this assistance, participants will maximize their legal aid hours and avoid costly lawyers fees. Women involved in this project will also create a resource manual that they can use when they are mentoring future workshop participants. |
