Purpose: Practical Frameworks for Change addresses the need to improve the level of services for women accessing shelters through the establishment of a standardized set of best practices across Alberta Emergency Shelters. The project, involving 10 Alberta Emergency Shelters, will focus on improving practices in the areas of safety, health, and cultural sensitivity to ensure that women recive improved services. It will involve action-based research, policy/ protocol development, and implementation. Through its collaborative approach, the shelter staff will draw first on the learnings from attending the the World Conference of Women’s Shelters, “Discovering the Common Core: Practical Frameworks for Change (Edmonton, September 2008), and secondly upon the learnings and experiences of a broad sampling of Alberta’s Emergency Shelters and the women they serve, thereby establishing implementing and evaluating best practices in Safety, Health and Cultural Sensitivity. The result of this initiative will be an improved level of services provided to women accessing shelters, ultimately decreasing their risk of returning to violent situations, and increasing their capacity to build healthy and safe lives for themselves and their children.
