Theme 1: Increasing Recruitment of Women into Non-Traditional Work

Project Goal

To increase the participation of women in non-traditional sectors and in sectors where women are under-represented.

These sectors include: science, engineering, technology, trades and others where women remain under-represented.

Project Objective

To promote and facilitate women's access to jobs and training in non-traditional sectors and in sectors where women are under-represented.

Description

This 24-month project will engage participants in developing/adapting innovative strategies and supports to increase recruitment and retention of women in non-traditional and other sectors where they remain under-represented. It will also engage employers, training partners and other industry stakeholders in providing meaningful employment and training opportunities for women in these sectors.

Funding Available

Up to $300,000 for a 24-month project.

Key Activities

  1. Plan project and adapt to specific local, sector or target group needs:
    • Conduct a gender-based analysis and needs assessment (including recruitment profiles and success factors) to identify the institutional and other barriers to women's recruitment and ongoing employment within the sector.
    • Identify and consult potential allies or project partners (e.g. training institutions, employers and industry associations).
  2. Develop recruitment models and supports, including retention strategies. For example,
    • resources and supports for employers, training partners and other industry stakeholders to enhance women's recruitment into the sector (e.g. recruitment models for employer and training partners, training programs for employers, job placement agreements with employers).
    • resources and supports for women to increase their recruitment and ongoing employment in non-traditional and other sectors where they remain under-represented (e.g. job retention support programs).
  3. Delivery and implemention
    • Work with women in target sectors, employers, training partners and other stakeholders to deliver resources and implement actions that support the recruitment and retention of women in these sectors. For example, supports for employers and industry stakeholders to promote diversity within their workplaces and create environments that are respectul and inclusive of women (e.g. resources to increase women's awareness of opportunities within these sectors and to ensure their preparedness for the workplace).
    • Engage with allies and other organizations.
    • Pilot tools and approaches to ensure their effectiveness.

Planned Results

  • Employers, training partners and other industry stakeholders understand the benefits of recruiting and retaining women in non-traditional and other sectors where women are under-represented.
  • Employers, training partners and other industry stakeholders have increased awareness of the issues and challenges related to women's recruitment and retention in these sectors.
  • Project participants can identify barriers to women's recruitment and retention in these sectors.
  • Project participants have demonstrated knowledge and skills to work within their organizations to address these barriers and to engage with employers to create work environments that are respectful and inclusive of women.

Longer-Term Results (after project's end)

  • Employers, training partners and other stakeholders have made changes within their organizations to recruit and retain more women in these sectors.

Detailed work plan and budget, list of project allies and partners, results management framework, evaluation plan.

Month 12

Interim report and strategy to share knowledge.

Month 24

Final report and evaluation.
