The Government of Canada is taking important steps to address violence perpetrated against Aboriginal women and girls. The five-year Action Plan outlines concrete actions to prevent violence, support Aboriginal victims, and protect Aboriginal women and girls from violence.
Status of Women Canada – Women’s Program
Objective: Achieve full participation of women in the economic, social and demogratic life of Canada. Funding is provided to eligible organizations in support of time-specific projects of 36 months at the local, regional and national levels that address the following three priority areas:
- Ending violence against women and girls
- Improving women's and girls' economic security and prosperity
- Encouraging women and girls in leadership and decision-making roles
Eligibility : Funding is provided for activities related to a project that:
- Occurs within a specific period of 36 months or less;
- Contributes to the Women’s Program’s mandate by addressing the Program’s objective;
- Falls within one or more of the Program’s areas of focus;
- Articulates clear plans to achieve demonstrable results; and
- Involves women who are affected by the issue being addressed by the project.

Department of Justice – Justice Partnership and Innovation Program, Violence against Aboriginal women and girls component
Objective: Support initiatives that contribute to reducing the vulnerability of young Aboriginal women to violence, including through breaking intergenerational cycles of violence and abuse.
Eligibility :
- National, provincial, municipal, regional, Aboriginal, community or professional non-for-profit organizations;
- Provincial, territorial, regional and municipal governments;
- Canadian educational institutions;
- Bands, tribal councils, self-governing First Nations and Inuit.

Department of Justice – Victims Fund
Objective: Support projects and activities that encourage the development of new approaches, promote access to justice, improve the capacity of service providers, foster the establishment of referral networks, and/or increase awareness of services available to victims of crime and their families.
Eligibility : This component is accessible only by provincial and territorial governments.

Public Safety Canada – Aboriginal Community Safety Development Contribution Program
Objective: Support communities in the development of efficient, integrated approaches that can maximize government investments. This will be accomplished by supporting three broad activities:
- developing community capacity, both through training and information/knowledge dissemination; (knowledge building, knowledge sharing, direct training);
- supporting communities to develop community safety plans; and/or
- supporting community-based pilot projects designed to explore and implement holistic, Aboriginal healing models responding to the safety needs of Aboriginal women and girls. (implementation readiness and implementation)
Eligibility :
- Aboriginal not-for-profit organizations (on and off-reserve, First Nation, non-status Indian, Métis, Inuit and urban);
- Aboriginal governments;
- Aboriginal communities; and
- Canadian universities and colleges.

Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada - Family Violence Prevention Program
Objective: Improve the safety and security of Aboriginal women, children and families. The FVPP has two components:
- funding for the day-to-day operations of a network of shelters that provide services for women and children living on reserve in provinces and in the Yukon.
- funding for community-driven prevention projects such as public awareness campaigns, conferences, workshops, stress and anger management seminars, support groups, and community needs assessments on reserve. Funding is also available for off-reserve projects since April 1, 2015.

- Chiefs and Councils of First Nation bands recognized by the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada
- Tribal Councils
- Provinces
- Yukon Territory
- First Nations authority, board, committee or other entity approved by Chief and Council
- Incorporated shelters
- First Nation Child and Family Services (FNCFS) Agencies or Societies
- Aboriginal communities and organizations
